Lammas and Lughnasadh: a first harvest family pack.

A printable Wheel of the Year pack for families. Explore bread, grain, Lugh, John Barleycorn and the first harvest through folklore, nature study, crafts, recipes and reflection.

Lammas falls at the beginning of August, between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. The days are still warm, but the season is changing. Grain bends in the fields, blackberries darken along the hedgerows, seed heads dry in the sun, and the evening light begins to soften.

This family pack explores Lammas and Lughnasadh through first-harvest traditions, Irish mythology, English and Celtic folklore, seasonal food, nature study, making and reflection.

It explains the difference between Lammas and Lughnasadh clearly. Lammas comes from the English “loaf mass” tradition, when bread made from the first grain was blessed. Lughnasadh is a Gaelic festival named after Lugh, the many-skilled figure of Irish mythology.

Alongside the history, there are stories and activities that invite children and adults to explore the season together. Use the whole pack, choose one theme for an afternoon, or return to different pages throughout August. There is no need to complete everything.

A note about this pack

This pack is a little shorter than my previous Wheel of the Year packs. It was completed during an unexpectedly difficult stretch of family life. Alongside ongoing caring responsibilities, my husband had a mini stroke and our cat needed surgery and careful indoor recovery - on top of being a home-ed mum to three sons. I had far less time than planned, so I chose to make a smaller, complete pack rather than rush extra pages or add material simply to make it longer.
It is priced lower than the other wheel of the Year packs to reflect this.

There are still 58 beautiful pages to explore, print and return to. As always, it is something to live alongside the season, not something your family needs to complete.
